Buildit: Building Blinkit in an Evolving India

Read

Takeaways

The Grofers → Blinkit story from the founder himself. Less startup mythology, more how decisions were actually made under pressure with very little certainty.

The Arc

  1. farming family in Punjab
  2. seeing retail + logistics abroad
  3. hyperlocal delivery
  4. Grofers
  5. pivots + near-death
  6. Blinkit: 10-minute delivery
  7. part of Zomato
The company kept changing format until the model matched how Indians actually shop.

What I Took From It

  • 10-minute delivery is a logistics design, not a marketing promise: small dark stores close to neighbourhoods instead of big warehouses outside the city.
  • Pivots are not failures if you keep the learning. Every earlier format taught them something the final one needed.
  • Trade-offs are the job. The book is full of choices where both options were bad.
  • India-specific context matters — you cannot copy a US playbook and expect it to work.

Reading it right after Unseen was great — two sides of the same deal, from two very different founders.
